HOME OF THE MIKE DEPEW FAN CLUB

In June of 2013, I left North Carolina for the University of Pittsburgh and a one month undergraduate program that connected me to other undergrads from around the country, all with a shared interest in information, technology, and grad school.

While there, myself and 20 other students were broken into research groups, each with our own academic adviser and research topic. My team, RockIT 1) decided to research the lack of Latinas working in STEM fields.

Our work included an extensive literature review, and a two part survey conducted over several months.

While the final paper is still in the works, you can view our poster with this PDF.

Our literature review contained the following articles:

  • Denner, Jill. “What Predicts Middle School Girls’ Interest in Computing.” International Journal of Gender, Science, and Technology 3.1 (2011): 53-69. Print.
  • Garcia, Gina A., and Sylvia Hurtado. “Predicting Latina/o STEM Persistence at HSIs and non-HSIs.” Presentation at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association, New Orleans, LA, April 2011.
  • Malcolm, Lindsey E., Alicia C. Dowd, and Terrence Yu. Tapping HSI-STEM Funds to Improve Latina and Latino Access to STEM Professions. Rep. Los Angeles: Center for Urban Education, 2010. Print.
  • Santiago, Deborah A. Latinas in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Rep. Washington DC: Excelencia in Education, 2008. Print.
  • Kerby, Sophia. The State of Women of Color in the United States. N.p.: Center for American Progress, 2012. 17 July 2012. Web.
