Week Two: Focus

Another week of firsts – most notably, my first sit-down with my site supervisor. A lot of what happens here with myself and my fellow field student is fairly relaxed, and there isn't much in the way of micromanaging that goes on. We use Basecamp to keep up-to-date on ongoing projects, and email to touch base on any issues or problems we foresee happening.

The sit-down between myself and my supervisor was twofold. First, it was to solidify my Learning Contract and go over my broader goals and what I want to accomplish with AUX. Second, it was to go over some of the projects that AUX has in mind for myself and the other field student working this semester.

Getting to go over my Learning Contract was a huge help – I ended up making several revisions, based off a few things. I mentioned that we use Basecamp for our project management. I came into this practicum with a list of projects already open to me on my Basecamp project site. Right away, I noticed the heavy focus that AUX currently has on their LibGuides.

I was a little surprised by this – I had always thought of LibGuides as somewhat outdated, and something that weren't hugely used by libraries and their communities. I was so wrong! This was great, as I actually really love LibGuides. Since creating my own LibGuide, I've fallen in love with the format and the potential they have.

Once I realized what AUX is trying to do with creating a Best Practices for their own Guides, I reworked my Learning Contract to include more emphases on DUL's LibGuides 1). I'll still be working to assist with other elements of the DUL website, but I'll also be adding in a component of LibGuides (especially in the creation of Best Practices material).

The vision on my practicum is narrowing, which feels wonderful. There was a bit of broadness when I first came in, which had its benefits. Wiggle room is nice when you aren't entirely sure what to expect in a new work space, but it can also lead to uncertainty and can force you to settle for something that ultimately makes you unhappy. Fortunately, between UNCG and the AUX team, there's enough structure and inspiration that I am confidant my practicum will be a great success. 2)
